As part of the church's ongoing ministry in genocide-torn Rwanda, a medical
mission team visited Rwanda from May 28 - June 6, 2001. The trip was
organized by the pastor, The Rev. Dr. Michael Feicht and by Carolyn Rea, a
member of the church and nurse practitioner who recruited the team.
Charles Kittle, a member of the church, went on the trip and provided expertise
in the areas of engineering and logistics.
The members of the medical mission team nicknamed "The Healing Team" brought
medicines and medical care to people desperately in need of treatment for
malaria and other diseases. They sought to establish counseling for
those emotionally devastated by the events of their country. And they
brought knowledge to the people, by teaching medical and dental skills.
The team members were:
Rev. Dr. Michael J. Feicht, Leader
Dr. Nathan Corbitt of Eastern College
Charles G. Kittle - Engineer
Speciose Ziherambere - Nurse and Medical Translator
Dr. Yede Dennis, DDS - Dental Team
Dr. Madison Patrick, MD - Medical Team
Dr. Fran Ward, Nurse Practitioner - Medical Team
Rosa Elba, Physicians Assistant - Medical Team
Rev. Dr. Deloris McCabe, Eastern College - Counseling Team
Rev. Dr. Dan Collins, Eastern Baptist Seminary
- Counseling Team
In the brief trip, the team accomplished its goals. The medical team
treated countless people, triage style, for malaria and other illnesses.
Pharmaceutical companies donated medical supplies and medicines. Dr.
Dennis showed students how to perform dental extractions. The
counseling team established a Pastoral Counseling program in Butare.
Repeat medical mission trips are planned, along with continuing partnerships
among churches in Rwanda and American Baptist Churches - New Jersey.
